1. Introduction of the Fushimi Area

The Fushimi area is located in the southern part of Kyoto city.

Hideyoshi Toyotomi, de facto ruler of Japan in the late 16th century, made Fushimi an important point of transport connecting Osaka and Kyoto. He also built Fushimi castle and made a canal around it at that time. The castle no longer exists, however, some remnants of the canal can be seen still today.

If you take a tour with Kyoto MANSAI Tours, you can learn some interesting facts about several historical sites while walking in the area. For example, a visit to one of the two starting points of the Battle of Toba-Fushimi in 1868.

In 1867, the power was returned from the Tokugawa Shogunate government to the emperor. The former shogunate army and the Anti-shogunate wing fought in the Battle of Toba-Fushimi in 1868, and the former lost.
