1. Introduction of Jonangu Shrine

Jonangu shrine was founded in 794, in the same year when Kyoto became the capital of Japan.

 

The main purpose of the foundation of this shrine was to protect the capital from the direction of South - thus the name became "Jonangu”, literally means "the shrine south of the capital".

 

Beautiful gardens of Jonangu Shrine were created in the 20th century, attracting many visitors especially in early spring when plum blossoms bloom, and in autumn when leaves change their colors.
