Arashiyama Monkey Park
To visit Arashiyama Monkey Park, we walk about 40 to 45 minutes in total in the mountain (uphill to get to the top, and downhill to come back), so wearing comfortable shoes is recommended.
The Park is located at an elevation of 160 meters (524 feet) above sea level, where you can see a panorama of Kyoto city (weather permitting) along with monkeys.
Please note that Arashiyama Monkey Park can be closed when a bad weather (such as a heavy rain/snow, typhoon) is expected or for other safety reasons. If Arashiyama Monkey Park is closed, the tour takes you to Koryu-ji temple instead. Please also note that when rainy/too hot, fewer monkeys appear. (The explanation of Koryu-ji temple is written below, in the Alternative section.)
Alternative of Arashiyama Monkey Park: Koryu-ji temple
If Arashiyama Monkey Park is closed, the tour takes you to Koryu-ji temple.
Koryu-ji Temple was founded in 603 and is said to be the oldest temple in Kyoto.
The temple has over 50 beautiful Buddhist statues (made between 8th and 14th centuries) in various sizes. “Miroku Bosatsu” is the most famous among them, for the beauty of its appearance - sitting in the half lotus position, the posture showing contemplation. Photography forbidden.
Tenryu-ji Temple
Tenryu-ji Temple is a UNESCO site and was founded in 1339 by then Shogun Takauji Ashikaga, for the repose of Emperor Godaigo’s soul.
Shogun was a title for the de-facto ruler of Japan as well as the leader of the samurai class.
Its landscape garden is spectacular, retaining almost the same form as when it was designed in the 14th century.
Kyoto is well known for beautiful Bamboo forests and we will walk through some of them.
Seiryo-ji Temple
At Seiryo-ji Temple, most of the current buildings were rebuilt in the 18th century while the origin of the temple dates back to the 9th century.
The main object of worship, the 9th-century statue of Buddha, is usually kept hidden. Even though you cannot see it, you will still be able to enjoy other parts of the temple, feeling the long history of it.
The gate, main hall, pagoda and scripture house look so grand - we will walk through the temple precinct to appreciate them in the tour.
Daikaku-ji Temple
Daikaku-ji Temple was originally a retirement villa of Emperor Saga, who lived in the 8th to 9th centuries. It was changed into a temple in 876 by his daughter after he passed away.
Although the current buildings are reconstructions, one of them was actually used by other Imperial family members in the 17th century, before it was moved to Daikaku-ji Temple.
Visitors can actually have a close look at the imperial style architecture, which would be quite a special experience. Please note that photography is forbidden inside those buildings.
