Gion walk

Gion is one of the five Geiko (Geisha) districts in Kyoto and it is the largest among the five.

Maiko and Geiko are professional entertainers of traditional Japanese dances and music. Maiko is an apprentice Geiko.

The area has its distinctive atmosphere and you can enjoy strolling there, listening to interesting facts about their culture.

Entoku-in Temple

Entoku-in temple was originally the residence of Kitano-mandokoro (nicknamed 'Nene'), the legal wife of Hideyoshi Toyotomi.

Hideyoshi Toyotomi was one of notable unifiers of Japan, who lived in the late 16th century.

You can see magnificent 17th-century dry landscape garden located in front of the temple building, and beautiful paintings on paper screen doors used in the building.

Kodai-ji Temple

Kodai-Ji temple was founded in 1606 to console the soul of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, by his legal wife Kita-no-Mandokoro. (About Hideyoshi, please refer to the above explanation of Entoku-in temple.)

Within the temple ground, you can see rustic tea houses, a small bamboo grove, and a city view as it is located on a hill.

Ryozen-kannon Temple

Ryozen-Kannon Temple was founded in 1955 in Kyoto to pray for the repose of the souls of war dead from WWⅡ.

This temple is well known for the huge statue called “Kannon”, a Buddhist deity of mercy. The size is 78ft (24m) high and 500 tons, made of concrete.

Kiyomizu Temple

Kiyomizu temple is a UNESCO site and its origin dates back to the 8th century. It is certainly one of the oldest temples in Kyoto.

It is noted for its unique architectural style - the main hall stands on a cliff, being supported with a wooden platform in front. The platform is projecting over the cliff and the supporting pillars look spectacular.

The object of worship of this temple is the image of the eleven-faced Kannon, a Buddhist deity of mercy, loved by Kyoto people for centuries.
