Daisen-in Temple (loated within Daitokuji Temple)
Zen Buddhism itself was originally founded in the 6th century AD in China, by an Indian man.
Later, it was officially imported to Japan in the 12th century and flourished in a Japanese way.
Daitokuji Temple is one of the largest Zen temples in Kyoto as it has over 20 sub-temples within its temple grounds.
Daisen-in Temple is one of them and has 16th-century exquisite Zen gardens. They are extremely clean and meticulously maintained, expressing the philosophy of Zen.
Photography is forbidden within Daisen-in temple’s precinct. (The photo here is one of the structures of Daitokuji temple)
Therefore, it is especially worth seeing the gardens with your own eyes.
Kinkaku-ji Temple (also called Golden pavilion)
Kinkaku-ji Temple or Golden pavilion is a UNESCO site and was originally built by Shogun in the 14th century.
It is now one of the icons of Kyoto, for having the second and third floors covered with gold leaf. Also, the pavilion is quite unique in that each floor has the different architectural style. The temple has a strolling style garden with numerous interesting characteristics.
Nijo Castle
Nijo Castle was built in 1603 as the official Kyoto residence of the 1st Tokugawa Shogun, Ieyasu Tokugawa.
In 1867, the Tokugawa military government declared the return of the sovereign power to the Emperor at Nijo Castle. Tokugawa’s rule lasted for about 270 years, from the early 17th to the middle of the 19th century.
You can see the samurai housing style architecture by visiting this relic of the Shogun. It is also designated as a UNESCO site.
Walk through Nishiki Food Market
Nishiki Food Market - the 390 meters (1,280 feet) long street is lined up with about 120 shops.
Food items sold there include everyday household dishes, fish, fruit, vegetables, tea, seasonings and kitchen utensils. It is fun to try different food items little by little or just walking browsing.
