Takamatsuzuka tumulus
In Asuka, there are many Imperial mausoleums and some tumuluses of powerful families - Takamatsuzuka tumulus is one of them. It is believed to have been created between 7th and 8th centuries.
The tumulus became famous nationwide when the wall paintings were discovered in 1972. The inside of the actual tumulus is not open to public for the preservation purpose, but the full-sized reproductions of the wall paintings are in the mural museum.
Tachibana-dera Temple
Do you know Shotoku-taishi, or Prince Shotoku? He was an Imperial prince, who lived in the 6th to 7th centuries. When Empress Suiko took the throne, Prince Shotoku helped her modernize the government system.
Buddhism was newly introduced to Japan from Korea through China in 538. Prince Shotoku made great efforts to promote Buddhism in Japan and built several temples including Tachibana-dera Temple. By visiting this temple, you can learn more about him and the related history.
The portrait of Prince Shotoku was printed on Japanese bills more than one time, as he is one of the most important historical figures in Japan.
Ishibutai Tumulus
The name "Ishibutai" comes from the Japanese words meaning a "stone stage", describing its appearance.
Ishibutai Tumulus is made up of more than 30 stones, whose total weight is about 2,300 tons.
By having a close look at the stones, you will be able to imagine the high engineering technology and transportation methods necessary to create this burial site back in the early 7th century.
Asuka-dera Temple
Asuka-dera Temple has the oldest existing Buddhist statue in Japan - the statue was made in 609.
Since the foundation of this temple in 596, the temple has experienced some fires. The current temple buildings are reconstructions, but the image of Buddha is original.
This statue is open to public, so you can see it with your own eyes, feeling the long history of it.
