1. Highlights

In this tour, you can visit Yakushi-ji, Toshodai-ji, Todai-ji temples and Kasuga-taisha shrine, all of which are parts of "Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara", a group of UNESCO sites.

 

Nara served as the permanent capital of Japan between 710 and 784. Nara is located about one hour from Kyoto and Osaka by train. Nara is also noted for the world's largest bronze statue of Buddha and the roaming deer. 

The guide will meet you in the lobby of your accommodation OR an alternate place (in ether case within Kyoto city OR Nara city) and take the public transport to get to the first destination in Nara. The meeting time will be different depending on the location of your accommodation/an alternate meeting place. 

 

We will have lunch along the route of the tour (Not included in the tour price; please pay locally). Usually, 2,500 yen - 3,500 yen per adult will be enough for a casual lunch, however the cost varies depending on the person and what kind of dishes you choose from a menu. Bringing Japanese yen cash with you will be handy to pay for lunch and snacks.

The tour ends at Kintetsu Nara station in Nara cityIf you would like to return/go to Kyoto city when the tour ends, the Guide will show you how.

  • This tour is private and guided: other guests outside your group will NOT participate the same tour. Maximum six people for each tour/group
  • The tour comprises of walking and the usage of public transport.
  • Taxis are possible upon your request however it will be your additional cost.

2. Itinerary

  • Please note that the actual order of visits can be different from the one written below, depending on the season, the location of your accommodation, etc.

Sometime between 8:00am and 9:00am (More accurate time will be informed after booking):

 

The guide will meet you in the lobby of your accommodation/ an alternate place (in ether case within Kyoto city OR Nara city) as the starting point of the tour.

Lunch

  • visit Todai-ji Temple (Great Buddha Hall)
  • visit Kasuga-taisha Shrine 

Sometime between 4:00pm and 6:00pm (varies depending on the meeting time and the duration of the tour) : 

Tour ends at Kintetsu Nara station in Nara city. If you would like to return/go to Kyoto city when the tour ends, the Guide will show you how.

*The general entry fees to visit places written on the itinerary are included, however, if those places are holding seasonal / special exhibitions/events and if you would like to see some of them, please pay locally as those costs are not included.

5. How to Book

Step 1: Inform your Requested Date for the Tour

  • Please submit the following form to inform your requested date for the tour.
  • Within 48hours you will receive a response, which informs you whether the guide (Fumiko) is available OR not on your requested date.

Step 2: Inform other necessary information

  • When the date is secured for you, you will receive the link of the "Booking Form" by e-mail.
  • In the Booking Form, you will be asked other necessary information.
  • Please submit the Booking Form within 7 days you receive it

Yakushi-ji Temple 

Yakushi-ji Temple was founded in 680 by then Emperor because his consort was ill and he wanted to construct this temple to pray for her recovery.

 

The East Pagoda is the only original structure which has survived numerous disasters and has remained intact; other magnificent temple buildings were all reconstructed through the donation made from people’s sutra hand-copying.

 

Yakushi-ji Temple has played a significant role as headquarters of Hosso sect of Buddhism in Japan.

Toshodai-ji Temple

Toshodai-ji Temple is closely associated with High Priest Ganjin, as he lived in this temple for some years before he passed away in 763.

 

Ganjin was originally invited from China, and is considered to be one of the most revered Buddhist monks in Japan even today for his tremendous contribution to Japanese Buddhism.

 

Some of the temple buildings and Buddhist statues have remained intact since its foundation of the late 8th century. Visiting this temple can give you a precious opportunity to feel the atmosphere of ancient Japan.

Todai-ji Temple

Todai-ji Temple is an enormous Buddhist temple in Nara. It was founded in the 8th century, in the hope that it would bring peace to Japan as the center of Japanese Buddhism back then.

 

 The principal object of worship is immense - the world’s largest bronze Buddha is 49 feet / 15 meters tall.  

 

Todai-ji Temple underwent two major fires in the 12th and 16th centuries, and each time the Great Buddha Statue and the temple buildings were reconstructed with great devotions of Japanese people nationwide. 

 

Kasuga-taisha Shrine

Kasuga-taisha Shrine is the family shrine or guardian shrine of the Fujiwara clan.

 

The Fujiwaras were the closest relatives to the Imperial Family from the 8th to 11th centuries and were one of the most influential historical fugures in Japan.

 

Today, the shrine is noted for its many lanterns, the sacred deer, and the beautiful Kasuga-style shrine architecture.
