Ujigami Shrine
The main building of Ujigami shrine is said to have been built in around 1060, which is one of the oldest remaining shrine structures in Japan.
It is part of the group of 17 UNESCO sites in Kyoto, including the background mountainous scenery of Ujigami shrine.
The three objects of worship here are the spirits of father and two sons, the father and one of the sons became emperors but the other son took his own life.
Byodoin Temple
Byodo-in Temple is also designated as one of the group of 17 UNESCO sites in Kyoto, and was founded in 1052 by a powerful aristocrat.
That year marked 2,000 years since the passing of the Buddha, and it was said to be the beginning of an age of decadence. People believed that the teaching of Buddhism would no longer be popular.
Therefore, this temple was built to realize the dream of the founder - to be reborn into the Buddhists’ Pure Land, which is believed to look like Byodoin Temple, after death.
Toji Temple
Toji Temple is also known as "Kyo-o-gokoku ji temple".
The founder of Toji temple is a Japanese man named “Kukai” (posthumous name “Kobo-daishi”), one of the most famous religious figures in Japan, who lived between the late 8th and early 9th centuries.
He was a Buddhist priest, a scholar, a prominent calligrapher and an educator.
You can see the tallest Five-story pagoda in Japan in the precinct of Toji temple: it is a symbol of Kyoto. Also, a number of magnificent Buddhist statues can be seen in some of the temple buildings.
In 1994, Toji Temple was designated as part of 17 UNESCO sites in Kyoto.
Kanchi-in Temple
Kanchi-in Temple was founded in the mid-14th century by a Buddhist monk Gaho at the wish of Cloistered Emperor Gouda. Before that, this place was the academic center of Toji Temple.
The Kyakuden (Reception Hall) is 1605 reconstruction and is a national treasure. The front garden is a beautiful rock garden created in a recent year.
