1. Introduction of Toji Temple

Toji Temple is also known as "Kyo-o-gokoku ji temple".

The founder of Toji temple is a Japanese man named “Kukai” (posthumous name “Kobo-daishi”), one of the most famous religious figures in Japan, who lived between the late 8th and early 9th centuries.

He was a Buddhist priest, a scholar, a prominent calligrapher and an educator.

He brought a lot of Buddhist scriptures of esoteric Buddhism from China to Japan in 806. Also, he imported techniques of Buddhist architecture, civil engineering and medicine from China.

You can see the tallest Five-story pagoda in Japan in the precinct of Toji temple: it is a symbol of Kyoto.

Also, a number of magnificent Buddhist statues can be seen in some of the temple buildings.

In 1994, Toji Temple was designated as part of 17 UNESCO sites in Kyoto.
